Gerald W. Smetana, MD, MACP

Professor of Medicine

Dr. Smetana is a general internist in the Division of General Medicine and Primary Care at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He received his medical degree at the University of California,San Francisco and completed his medical internship and residency at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. He is an active teacher clinician with a large primary care practice and plays a central role in the teaching of medical students, medical housestaff, and senior physicians. Colleagues have repeatedly recognized Dr. Smetana as one of the Best Doctors in America in a peer survey.

Howard Libman, MD
Howard Libman, MD, FACP

Professor of Medicine

Dr. Howard Libman is Chief of the Education Section, Division of General Medicine and Primary Care, at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.  He is also Ambulatory Training Director of the medicine residency program and directs the primary care and HIV primary care tracks.

Dr. Libman’s career has focused on training medical residents and students in primary care internal medicine, caring for patients with HIV infection, and educating health care practitioners in this field.  He provides regional and international training through his work with the New England AIDS Education and Training Center and the Partnership for Health Advancement in Vietnam, respectively.  He is co-editor of the textbook, HIV, three editions of which have been published by the American College of Physicians.  He is also a core faculty member of the International Antiviral Society-USA.
