Professor of Medicine

Dr. Smetana is a general internist in the Division of General Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He received his medical degree at the University of California, San Francisco and completed his medical internship and residency at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston.

Dr. Smetana is a Master of the American College of Physicians (MACP) and a series editor for the Annals of Internal Medicine. He has published widely in the peer-reviewed medical literature and is a co-editor of a textbook on evidence-based history taking. He is an active teacher clinician with a large primary care practice and plays a central role in the teaching of medical students, medical housestaff, and senior physicians. Colleagues have repeatedly recognized Dr. Smetana as one of the Best Doctors in America in a peer survey.

Howard Libman, MD
Howard Libman, MD, FACP

Professor of Medicine, Emeritus

Dr. Howard Libman is Attending Physician, Division of General Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical School (BIDMC), and Professor of Medicine, Emeritus, at Harvard Medical School.  He directs the HIV Program in Healthcare Associates, the hospital-based primary care practice.  His previous positions included Chief of the Education Section of the Division of General Medicine and Ambulatory Training/Primary Care Program Director at BIDMC.

Dr. Libman’s career has focused on training medical residents and students in primary care internal medicine, caring for patients with HIV infection, and educating health care practitioners in this field.  He provides regional and international training through his work with the New England AIDS Education and Training Center and the Partnership for Health Advancement in Vietnam, respectively.  He is co-editor of the textbook, HIV, three editions of which have been published by the American College of Physicians.  He is also a core faculty member of the International Antiviral Society-USA.
